French concrete road signs, the Paris region of the 1930s and 1940s, in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Miniart. A diorama accessory, not a model of a vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set from the manufacturer Miniart holds diorama accessories in the form of French concrete road and direction signs of the kind used around Paris in the 1930s and 1940s. It is not a model of a vehicle or of figures, but a backdrop that gives a scene its place and period.
A diorama is judged by what is in it besides the hardware. A vehicle on its own sets the action nowhere, whereas a road sign with a French inscription anchors a scene at once and without explanation. French prewar signage was typical in being made of concrete, that is of a durable and cheap material, not of sheet metal on a thin tube. The result is massive posts and panels with a texture of their own, which look quite different on a model from the later metal signs, and they suit scenes from the interwar period up to the middle of the 1940s.
The parts are built and glued like ordinary injection-molded plastic, that is with polystyrene cement. The key to the result is the painting: concrete is never uniformly gray. Apply a primer, then a light gray to beige base, and break the surface up with a few thin irregular patches of slightly different shades. A dark wash follows, which runs into the texture and the joints, and then a dry brush of a lighter color along the edges. On concrete the edges and corners are the first thing to wear away, so it pays to suggest chipped spots carefully. Finally add dust pigment at the foot of the post, where soil would collect in reality, and if you like, very fine hints of moss or green growth down at ground level.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and a diorama base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
