This is a set of French artillery crew figures in 1:35 scale, that is an accessory for a model of a gun, not a kit of the weapon itself. The figures are designed to complete a scene around a heavy Schneider gun and to give it both scale and action. The number of figures, their poses and the additional equipment are given on the packaging of the set, so that you know how many figures you can count on in the scene.
The French arms works Schneider was one of the leading European makers of artillery equipment and its designs were used not only in France but in a number of other armies as well. Heavy artillery of the period called for a numerous crew: the crew had to bring the gun into its firing position, secure it against recoil, fetch and prepare the ammunition, set the elevation and traverse and keep in touch with the observer. It is precisely this division of labor that makes figure sets a rewarding tool — only when the individual figures are placed around the weapon does it become clear how big the gun really was and how many people it took to serve it.
First clean the figures up carefully — mold seams on uniforms and faces show clearly once sprayed, so sand and polish them away. Spray the glued figures with a primer, which unifies the surface and reveals anything left unfinished. Build the flesh and the uniforms up in layers from a darker base to lighter, lit surfaces and soften the transitions with thinned paint. Paint the straps and harness, the pouches and the boots separately so that the shades do not clash. Before gluing the figures into the scene, place them dry and check that they do not get in each other's way and that their gazes are directed at what is happening in the scene.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model of the gun, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
