A set of miniature fruit crates from Matho Models, a specialist in diorama accessories. Low open crates, the kind in which fruit and vegetables have always been stored and sold at markets and in shops, are among the most rewarding props of civilian scenes in 1:35 scale. Once assembled and, if you wish, painted, you can stack them into columns, set them out on a market stall or load them onto the bed of a vehicle.
The crates work anywhere you want to show everyday life: a market, a greengrocer's, a farmyard, a shop's loading dock, the bed of a van or a horse cart. They work superbly in wartime and peacetime subjects alike, from the 1930s to the present day - a wooden fruit crate has barely changed in all that time. They stand out when filled: miniature fruit can be bought as a separate accessory, or made from little balls of modeling putty. When painting, start from pale faded wood, pick out the hollows with a brown wash and lighten the edges with a dry brush; you can tone the individual slats slightly differently so that the crates do not look uniform. Empty crates thrown about, on the other hand, beautifully round out a scene of a deserted street or a market after an air raid.
