This is not a tank kit, but an accessory for one. The set holds photo-etched parts from thin sheet intended for detailing a plastic model of the German Panther medium tank in the Ausf.A version and, according to the name, it includes the side armor skirts as well. The modeler has to own the matching kit; neither plastic parts nor the model itself are part of the package. The set is intended for the Hobby Boss kit.
The Panther was a German medium tank of the Second World War, put into production in 1943. It had a steeply sloped frontal hull armor plate, a 7.5 cm gun with a long barrel and suspension with interleaved road wheels. The Ausf.A version differed from the previous form above all in a reworked commander's cupola and a ball mount for the machine gun in the frontal hull armor. The sides of the hull were protected above the road wheels by thin hung armor plates, the so-called Schürzen, which were meant to reduce the effect of antitank projectiles. It is precisely these skirts that are always disproportionately thick in plastic and look far more convincing in thin metal — especially when bends, missing pieces and damage are suggested on them, as was common on vehicles in the field.
The skirts and their hanging rails call for accurate seating: first check the spacing on the hull dry, and only then glue. Degrease the brass before work, make the bends in a bending tool or between straight blades, and bend long parts along their whole length at once. Suggest damage with a blunt tool on a soft surface before gluing them on. Apply superglue in minimal amounts with the tip of a wire, so that it does not run under a part. Use a primer on metal, or the paint will come off when handled. It pays to reverse the order of work compared with an ordinary build — finish and paint the running gear before the skirts close off access to it.
This is an add-on set, not a model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
