Period posters in a scene

A set of German propaganda posters from the Second World War in 1:35 scale. On a diorama posters are a rewarding small detail: pasted on a wall, on a post or on a notice board they pin down the place and period of a scene more precisely than a whole vehicle, and they take up an area a fingernail would cover.

Where to place them in a scene

They do the most work where they would really hang: on the stucco of a house, on a wooden fence, on a post at a crossroads or on a notice board by an entrance. Imperfection helps credibility. A poster pasted up by human hands has its bottom corner askew, it peels at the edges, rainwater makes it wavy, and a new one is usually stuck over an older layer. On ruins especially it is right for it to be torn or painted over.

Work tips

• Try the fit dry and only then reach for the glue.
• Work with tweezers, a small part is easily soiled and creased between the fingers.
• You can tear the edges instead of cutting them; a torn edge looks truer.
• Let the irregularity of the backing show through; the poster should not be stretched as if ironed.
• A suitable glue and the preparation are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
