An accessory for painting, not a kit. The masks cover the rim of the road wheel and leave the rubber tire band exposed, so the transition between the two shades comes out sharp even without a steady hand. The cut matches the wheels from the Rye Field Model kit. The target kit is given deliberately with this range, because every manufacturer makes its wheels a different size and a mask from one molding will not fit another.
The Puma is a modern tracked infantry fighting vehicle and it differs from a classic tank in how little of the running gear you will actually see. It carries six rubber-tired road wheels on each side, but the whole upper run and a substantial part of the wheels disappear behind modular side plates. What stays visible is the lower strip and whatever shows through the slots. That is precisely why it pays to concentrate on the outer faces of the wheels and on the lower circumference: that is all a viewer will judge on a finished model. The wheels are also relatively small and densely set side by side, so once they are glued you can no longer get a brush between them. Painting them before seating them in the hull is practically a necessity here.
The Puma is a modern machine and weathering on it is built differently than on vehicles with an older running gear. Heavy cakes of mud usually do not suit it; a fine dry deposit does. Once the mask is off, let a dark wash run into the groove between tire band and rim, which settles the edge and picks out the shape of the disc. Then comes a light veil of pigment dust on the underside of the hull and on the lower edge of the side plates, where dirt would catch first. The running surface of a rubber tire band wears to a shine, so a hint of dry-brushing around the outer circumference and a discreet flattening of the rest of the surface will help.
Paints, glue and the kit itself are not included in the package. Check before ordering that your kit matches the one the set is cut for.
