Laundry drying is one of the details that give a diorama a lived-in feel. It comes into its own on a rope stretched between buildings or between vehicles, on an improvised line in a billet, thrown over a crate, over a railing or over a branch. Small things like these are precisely what gives away that a scene is not a display diorama of machinery but a place where life goes on every day.
For flat printing to resemble textile, it has to stop being flat. Dampen the cut-out part lightly from the back, so that it softens, and form soft folds in it with your fingers or tweezers; let it finish drying in that shape, for example thrown over a wire. Do not make sharp creases; cloth breaks in curves. The sag on a line is produced by a thin wire glued into the upper edge from behind, with which the shape can be fine-tuned once dry.
Glue with PVA or matte glue applied in a thin layer, ideally only at the points of attachment. Once dry, spray with a weak layer of matte clear coat, which suppresses the sheen of the printing and makes work with washes possible. A very thinned wash run into the folds creates shadow and the laundry visually gains volume; a light dusting with pigment brings the shade in line with the rest of the scene.
