The sheet from ETA diorama is a printed paper accessory that takes the place of painting graffiti by hand on the surfaces of a diorama in 1:35 scale. These are not decals lifted off with water and they are not stencils – you get printed paper from which you cut a motif out following its own shape and glue it onto a wall, a concrete panel, a roller shutter or the side of an abandoned vehicle. For a modeler who does not dare paint small lettering by hand, it is the quickest route to a present-day urban look.
Never trim graffiti into a rectangle – run the outline tightly around the shape of the painting, otherwise a paper field will show once it is glued down. The undercoat has to be smoothly painted and matte; on the rough texture of render the paper stands proud in the places where it does not touch. Coat the back with a thin layer of matte glue, lay it on and press the air out with a soft brush. Over an edge, a corner or a door frame, draw the paper on lightly dampened, so that it gives way to the bend without creasing.
So that the motif does not look like a sticker, go around its perimeter with a dry brush loaded with pigment in the color of the wall – the edge disappears into the dust. Wear part of the painting through with very fine abrasive paper, so that the texture of the undercoat shows, and lay a thin glaze in the shade of the wall over the whole area. Matte clear coat at the end unifies the sheen of the printing with its surroundings; a glossy spot on an otherwise matte wall gives the paper away at first glance.
