A set of photo-etched side skirts in 1:35 scale for a model of the Israeli Merkava Mk.IV main battle tank, in the second form offered, designated as type 2. The skirts of the Merkava appeared in several forms both in service and through upgrades, and because this is a visually dominant part of the vehicle, the maker offers the sets separately according to type. Metal in a scale thickness replaces oversized plastic and makes it possible to suggest the bending or leaning of individual segments. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory set.
The Merkava Mk.IV is an Israeli main battle tank built around an emphasis on crew survival. The powerplant at the front acts as a further protective layer, and the rear part of the hull has its own entrance and usable internal space. The main weapon is a 120 millimeter smoothbore gun. The running gear is covered at the sides by skirts whose shape and division differ according to the production batch and later modifications, so from a modeling point of view choosing the right type matters.
Cut the plastic skirts off and sand the seating surface flat. Straighten the metal segments on glass and make the bends in a bending tool. Degrease with alcohol before gluing; glue in spots with cyanoacrylate glue, and on long edges with epoxy, which allows the position to be adjusted. A base coat meant for metal is necessary. When painting, work with the shade typical of Israeli equipment and count on every unevenness showing on the large smooth area of the skirts. Build the weathering on light dust, wear on the edges and a fine emphasis of the gaps between the segments.
This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
