Outdoor air conditioning units of the kind that hang on facades and stand on the roofs of buildings in present-day town scenes. The package is made up of fifteen cast parts, a metal fret for the grilles and decals.

An outdoor air conditioning unit is one of the few objects that date a scene all by themselves. As soon as it appears on a wall it is clear that the scene takes place in the last few decades, and that even when the building itself looks a hundred years older. For a town diorama it is therefore a powerful tool: a few units hung asymmetrically under the windows turn an anonymous facade into a particular street.
The casing of a unit is of painted sheet metal and its aging proceeds differently from that of military vehicles. It does not rust over whole areas, but at the points where the paint is broken by a screw or by the edge of a bracket, and the traces then run down over the light surface. The metal fret from the package supports this story, because a photo-etched grille has the real thickness of sheet metal and you can look inside through it. Before painting, however, it has to be degreased and undercoated, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth rolled surface and will be scraped off while the bracket is being fitted.
A casting, photo-etched parts and printed film meet in one package and each of them wants a different method. The casting is washed, the photo-etched parts degreased, and a decal needs a glossy surface beneath it. When the order is kept, the whole thing comes out uniformly matte and the differences in material are lost.
The units look best hung at various heights, with the run of the pipes led down the wall and a dark run-off stain under the drain. A regular row one below the other looks artificial.
