An aid for painting, not a model and not a part. The templates mark out the rubber tire band of the road wheel so it can be sprayed with a sharp border. This variant is cut for the older moldings, which come from a common origin and are offered by Italeri, Revell and Testors alike. A separate set is cut for the newer molding by another manufacturer — the wheel diameters differ and the templates cannot be swapped.
The M-47 has torsion bar suspension with six road wheels on each side and with return rollers. The key detail for masking is the rear idler wheel, which on this design has a diameter similar to the road wheels and sits right down on the ground — from the side it therefore looks like another wheel in the row, and it is easily forgotten when painting. The running gear stays exposed from the side, covered only by the upper fenders, so every unfinished detail shows. And since these are older moldings, expect the wheels to have small flash or a mold seam on the tire band; before you stick a mask down, sand and burnish the tire band, or paint will bleed under the template over the unevenness.
This is an interesting case in terms of effort against result. It is precisely with older moldings that a cleanly finished running gear brings the biggest visual leap — it is a detail with which the age of a molding can largely be bought back. It therefore pays off above all for anyone who wants to get the most out of an older kit. Conversely, when you are building an older model quickly, as an extra for a diorama or as a practice build, the time is better spent elsewhere.
