About product

M1235 MaxxPro Dash with SPARK II Mine Roller 1:35 (Panda)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Panda. The subject is the American M1235 MaxxPro Dash armored vehicle with the SPARK II mine-clearing attachment added, which is mounted on the nose and runs ahead of the vehicle. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The particular contents of the package - the number of sprues and parts, the presence of photo-etch, the contents of the decal sheet and the finishes offered - are given on the box and in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The MaxxPro belongs to the MRAP category, that is wheeled armored vehicles designed so that the crew survives an explosion under the hull. A characteristic feature is the raised hull with a V-shaped bottom, which deflects the blast wave to the sides, and the high-set cab with large armored windows. The vehicle was developed and built by Navistar Defense. Compared with the base form, the Dash version has a shorter and lighter chassis, which improves handling in rough terrain and in cramped built-up areas. The SPARK attachment, short for Self Protection Adaptive Roller Kit, consists of an assembly of heavy rollers suspended ahead of the vehicle; by pressing on the ground it is meant to set off a charge before the wheels run onto it.

Building and painting tips

The chassis and the mounting of the mine-clearing attachment deserve the most attention - finish them and let them cure properly before any load comes onto the model, because the rollers are heavy and the arm is long. It pays to mask the large glazed area of the cab carefully; on this type of vehicle it is a prominent visible feature. Before painting, degrease the whole model and apply a base coat, as a wheeled vehicle with its many surfaces reveals every imperfection. Consider whether you will glue the rollers on permanently or attach them so that they come apart, for transport and storage. The weathering comes last: dust where the air flows around the body and heavier soiling on the rollers and in the wheel wells, which take the most in service.

Who the model is for

  • modelers of modern wheeled armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • builders who want a vehicle on the shelf with a prominent assembly out in front, not just an angular hull
  • collectors of MRAP vehicles who already have related types on the shelf
  • anyone interested in a diorama on the theme of reconnaissance and route security

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

The mounting of the mine-clearing rollers. The assembly is heavy and the arm is long, so the joints have to be properly cured before you start handling the model.
