A masking set for painting the road wheels of the American Bradley family of fighting vehicles in the M2, M2A2 and reconnaissance M3 versions. This is not a model or a set of replacement parts: the masks cover the rim of the wheel so the rubber tire band can be sprayed on its own with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kits from Tamiya.
The Bradley has six road wheels with a rubber tire band per side, the drive sprocket at the front, the idler wheel at the rear and return rollers. Another feature is the key one, though: the whole running gear is covered by side armor skirts, which on the later versions reach down a long way. Only the lower sliver of the wheels, and the part between the skirt and the track, is left visible on a finished model. That leads plenty of modelers into the temptation to skimp on the wheels — except that it is precisely that narrow visible part that sits at the viewer's eye level, and a botched tire band positively shines there. On vehicles with an aluminum hull and a low silhouette the running gear is also captured close up in photographs almost every time. A masking set deals with this detail quickly, so it is worth spending the time on even with a covered running gear.
Here the placing of the step is entirely unambiguous: the wheels have to be finished before the side skirts go on the model. Once the skirts are seated you cannot reach the wheels with an airbrush or with a finger. The routine is therefore the base coat on the hull and the wheels, a day to cure, the masks and the spraying of the tire bands, fitting the wheels to the arms — and only then the skirts, and the tracks at the very end. Anyone who glues the skirts on while building the hull, because that is the order in the instructions, ends up finishing the tire bands with a brush, blind, through a gap a few millimeters wide.
This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
