An injection-molded plastic kit of an unassembled and unpainted model of the British M3 medium tank in the special CDL conversion in 1:35 scale. In place of the usual turret with a gun, the vehicle carries an enclosed turret with a powerful arc searchlight. According to the manufacturer the package holds photo-etched parts and link-and-length tracks.
The abbreviation CDL stands for Canal Defence Light, a secret British program of the Second World War. A very powerful arc searchlight was built into the turret of a tank, and its light passed through a narrow slit. The aim was to light up an area during night operations and to make it harder for the enemy to find their bearings. The carrier was the M3 medium tank, known in British units as the Grant, with its characteristic hull and, in its original form, a side-mounted gun. CDL vehicles were used in river crossings at the end of the war and some of them went to the Asian theater as well. Because of the secrecy, their use stayed limited.
Finish the running gear and the inner surfaces first, because they disappear once the hull is closed. Build the link-and-length tracks on a flat surface and let them cure enough before fitting. Bend the photo-etched parts over a metal edge and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. Lay the base shade down with an airbrush in thin coats, then pick the detail out with a dark wash and add dust and mud pigments to the underside of the hull and the running gear. It is best to deal with the slit of the searchlight at the end, so that it does not get clogged with paint.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
