A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the American M60 medium tank in 1:35 scale, cut for the kit from Takom. It is not a kit or a replacement part, but a modeling aid: the mask seats on the wheel rim and you spray the tire band on its own. Separate M60 masks are cut for the kits of other manufacturers in parallel, so go by whose box you are building.
The running gear of the M60 consists of individually sprung wheels on torsion bars, a row of return rollers above them and, at each end, two wheels that merely resemble road wheels: at the front an idler wheel with track tension adjustment, at the rear a toothed drive sprocket. Neither has a rubber tire band, so a mask does not belong on them — that is the commonest mistake when painting, and it is easily avoided if you sort the parts as soon as they come off the sprue. The road wheels themselves have a dished pressed rim and a wide tire band; the transition between them is a sharp edge with no gradual run-in, so a mask seats there precisely and the border after spraying looks factory-made. The return rollers have a tire band too, but a markedly smaller diameter — if you want to mask them, expect that to be a separate mask size.
Before painting, sort the running gear into three dishes: road wheels, rollers, drive sprocket and idler wheel. That will save you more time than any trick with an airbrush. Spike the wheels on skewers pushed into a polystyrene board. Lift a mask off the sheet with a needle, transfer it with fine-tipped tweezers and seat it with a blunt toothpick; do not press with a fingernail, as a ridge would form at the edge. Check through a magnifier with side lighting; you are looking for the dark line of a gap between the mask and the tire band. Spray square, in thin coats and with the same number of passes on every piece. Lift the masks off while the paint is not yet fully cured, and pull at a slant across the surface — a square pull can tear the paint from under the edge on a thin coat.
This is an accessory for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
