A decal sheet for the large 1:35 scale with five Polish Mil Mi-24 attack helicopters, from a training machine of 2001 to service in Iraq in 2007 and in Afghanistan in 2013.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet covers five particular Mil Mi-24 helicopters of the Polish Air Force. Three of them are the older D version, two represent the newer W, which is the export form of the V version with more powerful engines and different gun armament.
Poland introduced the Mi-24D at the end of the 1970s and the attack helicopters stayed in its front line longer than with most other European operators. The sheet offers the machine with tactical number 461, which escorted convoys around Ad Diwaniyah in Iraq in 2007, and number 956 from the ISAF contingent in Ghazni province in Afghanistan in 2013. It was these two deployments that gave the Polish Hinds their desert finishes and the mark of real combat service, which is worth suggesting on a model.
The remaining three show machines from Poland: the training machine with number 015 from the training center for engineering and air personnel in 2001, number 176 from the 49th Air Base in 2012 and number 741 from the attack helicopter regiment in 2002.
Decals hold best on a smooth gloss varnish. Once settled, the edge of the carrier film is leveled with a decal softener and the whole surface is sealed with a matte or satin clear coat; in a large scale the edge of the film shows far sooner than in small scales, so this step is not worth skipping.
Attack helicopters that one army keeps in service for so long go through several camouflages, a change of national insignia and a different system of tactical numbers. The five machines on the sheet are therefore not just five ways of finishing a model but a small cross-section of how the same type changed over the years. A modeler who builds two of them from one sheet gets a pair on which the development is visible at first glance.
