The modern refrigerator in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer MAiM, in the version with the door closed, is a prop that anchors a scene in the present at once. While classic diorama accessories aim at the 1940s, a refrigerator belongs in the kitchen of today, and modern subjects have grown strongly among diorama builders in recent years. It is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted.
A closed refrigerator comes into its own in the interior of an apartment or a kitchen, in the corner of a garage or an office, but its starring role comes in post-apocalyptic and wartime scenes of the modern era: a gutted apartment, a looted shop, a kitchen torn open by an explosion. It also works superbly carried out into the street, beside a dumpster, on a landfill, on the bed of a moving truck. The 1:35 scale matches ordinary figures and vehicles, so a scene is easy to fill out.
A new refrigerator is caught by a white, cream or stainless finish with a satin sheen, so prime the smooth surfaces carefully, because every flaw shows on a glossy surface. For a post-apocalyptic scene reach instead for chipping with a sponge, rust streaks from the edges and a matte dusting with pigments. A small detail such as a dark wash around the door handle sells the scale better than anything else.
The accessory is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
