This photo-etched brass set from Voyager Model in 1:35 scale is meant for completing a plastic kit of the modern American M1A1 Abrams tank in TUSK fit. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory for the modeler: it replaces selected plastic parts with finer metal ones and adds detail that will not fit into injection-molded plastic for technological reasons. The set is cut for the Dragon 3535 kit; it can be used in another kit only with modifications.
The M1A1 Abrams is the main battle tank of the American army, powered by a gas turbine and armed with a 120 mm gun. The abbreviation TUSK denotes a kit of features for operations in built-up areas: add-on armor tiles on the side covers over the running gear, slat armor at the rear, a shield for the commander's machine gun and lighting for working in streets. Those very features make up a quantity of thin sheet, eyes, brackets and perforated parts on a model, which is exactly what photo-etched parts handle better than a mold.
Injection-molded plastic has a technological minimum wall thickness. The edges of covers, eyes, clips and perforated sheet therefore come out of a kit several times thicker than the scale calls for. Brass sheet in 1:35 comes close to the real thickness and, once painted, an edge looks crisp and convincing. Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface rather than breaking them out; level the remains of the tabs with a fine file. Bend longer strips in a bending tool or between two steel jaws, so that the bend comes out crisp and in one plane.
A photo-etched set is an accessory; it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
