About product

Panther Ausf. A and D engine deck grilles 1:35 (AMMO of Mig Jimenez)

This is an accessory set, not a model of the vehicle. It replaces the covers of the cooling openings on the rear deck, that is the area that is visible from above on a finished model and that catches the eye first when the model is displayed. Injection-molded plastic there casts only a suggested grid in principle, whereas on the real vehicle these are open grilles above the fans and the radiators. According to its name the set is drawn for the Ausf. D and Ausf. A versions. It is a resin and plastic accessory for vehicles in 1:35 scale.

The real subject

The Panther was a German medium tank introduced during the Second World War. Technically it was marked by heavily sloped frontal armor, a long 7.5 cm gun and running gear with interleaved road wheels. It was built in several production versions; the Ausf. D version was the first production one and the Ausf. A followed with a series of modifications to the turret and the hull. The rear deck carried large round covers above the fans and longitudinal intake grilles, and their arrangement differed between the individual production runs.

Building and painting tips

First check which version your kit corresponds to, and only then seat the parts. Cut the covers off according to the instructions of the kit and level the area out fully. It pays to glue a darkly painted backing under the three-dimensional grilles, so that the openings do not look empty. Glue with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue applied with a wooden stick. Painting is easiest when the grilles are sprayed separately with the base color, glued in and only then the whole surface is evened out. A thin wash and light dusting with pigment then work well in the recesses, because in service the grilles became clogged with dust and fallen leaves.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Panthers of the Ausf. D and Ausf. A versions
  • modelers who object to a solid plastic cover instead of an open grille
  • anyone interested in display cases and dioramas viewed from above
  • more advanced modelers used to cutting parts of the original parts away

This is an accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to its name, for the Ausf. A and Ausf. D versions. For other production runs, check the arrangement of the rear deck against your reference.

Yes, the grilles are open. That is why it is recommended to glue a darkly painted backing under them or to suggest the inside of the cooling compartment.

It is not. It is an accessory set, and the model itself has to be obtained separately.

Best after the base color has been sprayed on, so that the deck can be painted comfortably from the inside as well. The final shade then evens the whole surface out.
