Paving of large format stone slabs belongs to courtyards, arcades, forecourts in front of important buildings and to the sidewalks of towns that cared about appearances. It differs from small setts not only in size but in how it behaves toward the eye: there are few joints, the area looks calm, and the whole impression is carried by the texture of the stone and by the irregular dimensions of the individual slabs. That is exactly why it suits places where a scene is meant to be urban and dignified at the same time.
The item is worked by laser from acrylic and is supplied in a format of 141 x 96 mm. The manufacturer's data gives eleven elements whose dimensions are not uniform. A low number at the same format means the individual slabs are large, which corresponds to slabs roughly a meter across in reality.
With large format paving the joint decides how believable it is. It should be narrow but not perfectly straight, and in places where vehicles drove it is useful to indicate a sunken or cracked slab. The irregular dimensions of the elements make it possible to lay rows with an offset, which looks more natural than a grid.
Stone never has one shade. It pays to establish the area with a base tone and then shift the individual slabs slightly toward warmer and cooler positions; only a final soiling of the joints unifies them. A dark wash run into the joints is what visually divides the area and gives it depth.
