About product

Quickwheel Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf.E wheel masks 1:35

A masking set for painting the road wheels of the German Pz.Kpfw. III medium tank in the Ausf.E version. It is neither a kit nor replacement wheels — the masks cover the rim so the rubber tire band can be sprayed on its own and with a clean edge. The set is cut for the kit from Dragon.

What makes the running gear of the Ausf.E special

In terms of the running gear the Ausf.E version is the turning point of the whole type. Where the earlier variants used a different suspension layout and a different number of wheels, the Ausf.E moves to six road wheels per side hung on torsion bars, with return rollers to go with them, the drive sprocket at the front and the idler wheel at the rear. The wheels are medium in size, with a bolted ring and a rubber tire band, and there are two rows of six of them on the model — that is, twelve rubber borders that have to be the same width. The vehicle has side fenders, but the wheels stay exposed along their whole length, so the running gear carries a large part of the final impression. What matters for a masking set is precisely that the variants of the Pz.Kpfw. III differ from one another in their wheels — a set aimed at the Ausf.E is therefore not interchangeable with a set for the later versions.

When the wheels come up in the build

On tanks with torsion bar suspension the wheels are often glued to the arms fairly early, because that is the only reliable way to keep them in line and to have the model standing straight. Expect, then, that you will probably be masking on the model itself rather than on loose parts. Adapt the order to that: spray the hull and the wheels in the base shade together, let it cure for a day, then fit the masks straight onto the glued wheels and finish spraying the tire bands from the side. Hold the airbrush square to the wheel, not at a slant from below, or you will blow paint onto the fenders.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf.E in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want a clean tire band border on twelve wheels
  • Those who mask on an assembled running gear
  • Collectors of Pz.Kpfw. III variants, where the road wheels differ between versions

This is a masking accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

The road wheels differ between the versions of this type. The set is intended for the Ausf.E version and for the Dragon kit; with a different version we recommend laying the mask on dry.

Yes, with torsion bar suspension masking is often done on the model itself. Just guide the airbrush square to the wheel so the paint does not go onto the fenders.

The exact number of masks and the extent of the coverage are stated on the box.

No. You use the wheels from the kit; the set serves solely for masking while painting.
