About product

Dragon 1:35 Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.N, s.Pz.Abt.501, Tunisia 1942/43 (plastic kit)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the German Panzer III medium tank in the Ausf.N version in 1:35 scale from Dragon. The model is done in the markings of the heavy tank battalion s.Pz.Abt.501, which fought in Tunisia in 1942 and 1943. The kit belongs to the modern Dragon Smart Kit line and as a rule offers well-developed parts including photo-etch and quality tracks. Take the exact contents of the box from the manufacturer's information.

The real subject

The Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.N was the last production version of the Panzer III tank. Unlike the earlier versions it carried a short low-velocity 75 mm gun (the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24) intended for fire support, the same type of weapon that the early Panzer IVs had. That is exactly why Ausf.N vehicles were often attached to battalions of heavy Tiger tanks, to which they gave close support against infantry and soft targets. The s.Pz.Abt.501 battalion was one of the first units armed with the Tiger I and fought in the North African campaign in Tunisia until the surrender in 1943.

Building and painting tips

Finish the running gear and any interior before you close the hull. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Sand and tan base colors suit the African theater; build the weathering with the dry environment in mind, with strong dust and sand effects from pigments on the running gear and the lower hull and finer washes in the detail. An airbrush and primer are recommended.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in German armor of the Second World War
  • Builders interested in the North African (Tunisian) campaign
  • Modelers who want to set the support version of the Panzer III with the short 75 mm gun apart
  • Collectors of equipment connected with the heavy Tiger tank battalions

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Ausf.N was the last production version and carried a short low-velocity 75 mm gun for fire support (the same type as the early Panzer IVs) instead of the anti-tank 50 mm gun of the earlier versions. That is why it was often attached to Tiger tank battalions.

It was a German heavy tank battalion, one of the first units with Tiger I tanks. It fought in Tunisia in 1942 and 1943 as part of the North African campaign.

Go for sand and tan schemes and dry dust effects: pigments on the running gear and the lower hull, fine washes in the detail.
