1:35 Resin wine bottles and crates

1:35 Wine bottles and crates — a resin set from Squadron

This item is not a model and not a kit. It is a set of small resin accessories for dioramas in 1:35 scale: wine bottles and crates to go with them. The exact number of pieces in the package is not stated here.

Where the set fits

Small civilian props do more in a diorama than another vehicle. Bottles and crates define the setting at once — the yard of a country house, a cellar, a supply depot, the bed of a truck, an inn or the ruins of a house with its contents scattered about. At the same time they fill the important role of a guide to scale: from a familiar object a viewer subconsciously judges the size of the whole scene. The set suits civilian and military settings alike and can be combined with figures handling the objects.

Building and painting tips

First separate the castings from the casting blocks with a fine saw and wash them in warm water with detergent so that the mold release agent disappears. Primer follows — without it the paint will not hold on smooth resin. Glass is easy to imitate: spray a gloss silver or light base and over it a thin layer of clear green or brown paint, which gives the impression of a bottle with light coming through. Finally seal it all with gloss varnish, as matte glass looks unconvincing. You can manage labels from a strip of thin paper or from a home-made decal. Crates, by contrast, need a matte surface: a light sand base, a dark wash into the joints between the slats and a dry brush to pull out the chipped edges. Lay a few bottles on their sides or break them — irregularity looks convincing.

Who the set is for

• For builders of dioramas in 1:35 scale who are fine-tuning a civilian setting
• For figure modelers looking for props for their figures' hands
• For supply and rear-area scenes with trucks
• For advanced modelers used to working with resin

This is a diorama accessory, not a kit. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. When sanding resin, do not inhale the dust and use respiratory protection.
