About product

A Soviet tank crewman in a German winter jacket 1:35 — MIG Productions

A resin figure in 1:35 scale from MIG Productions. It depicts a Soviet tank crewman of the Second World War period in a captured German winter jacket, a so-called parka. It is not a vehicle kit but a standalone figure meant to give a model scale and narrative content. The casting is supplied unassembled and unpainted, in several parts that are cleaned and glued together before painting.

The real subject

In winter Soviet tank crews wore quilted trousers and jackets, leather or canvas coveralls and soft helmets. Captured equipment was common practice on the Eastern Front on both sides, because winter clothing was in short supply and highly valued; the German winter jacket in its reversible form was among the pieces most often taken over. The combination of Soviet and German equipment on one figure is therefore a historically documented rather than an exceptional phenomenon, and it is a rewarding subject for a diorama, because on its own it suggests a story and the conditions in which the crews served.

Building and painting tips

Before building, wash the resin castings with lukewarm water, dish soap and a brush to remove the remains of the mold release agent from the mold, otherwise the paint will hold badly. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter, never break them off, and sand wet with respiratory protection. The parts are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, or with epoxy on larger surfaces; ordinary glue for plastic does not work on resin. Fill the small gaps in the shoulders and the neck. Apply a thin primer before painting; both the flesh and the equipment are built up well in acrylic and refined with oil paints, which allow soft transitions. Finally bring out the details with a wash and with pigments on the footwear and the lower part of the equipment.

Who the figure is for

  • for modelers who are bringing a diorama or a display case with equipment in 1:35 scale to life
  • for those interested in figure painting who want to practice flesh and fabrics
  • for collectors who are adding a figure to an already built model
  • rather for more experienced modelers because of the work with resin

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a standalone figure; a model of a tank or of other equipment is bought separately.

From modeling resin. The parts are therefore glued with cyanoacrylate glue, ordinary glue for plastic has no effect on them, and before painting the casting has to be washed free of the mold release agent.

With basic care yes, but working with resin is more demanding than with plastic. Cutting off the casting blocks, wet sanding and filling the gaps are necessary.

A proven procedure is an acrylic base over a primer and a finish with oil paints, which allow soft transitions on the flesh as well as on the fabrics.
