About product

1:35 Sd.Kfz. 164 Nashorn wheel masking set for the AFV Club kit

A painting accessory, not a kit of the vehicle. The masks stick onto the road wheels and separate the rubber tire band from the rim, so you need not line the border with a brush. The set is cut for the wheels from the 1:35 scale Sd.Kfz. 164 Nashorn kit by AFV Club.

How this ties in with painting the tracks

On a tracked vehicle the wheels and the tracks form one visual whole and it pays to plan them together. Tracks are painted separately in practically every case, because neither their shade nor the worn metal that follows can be done on an assembled running gear. Masked wheels fit that logic exactly: you paint them on their own, take the masks off, finish the tracks on their own as well, and only then put the whole running gear together. That removes the risk of the dark track shade drifting onto the tire bands, or the other way round. The second connection is one of shade. If you spray the rubber tire bands and the tracks in the same color, the running gear merges into a single dark mass and the mask loses its work — so pitch the tire bands a little differently from the tracks, to keep them distinguishable. The last point is the order of the metal wear: put the polished metal on the running surface of the tracks and on the edges of the tire bands right at the very end, after the weathering, or dust and mud will suppress it.

Practical tips

Prime the wheels, press the mask down around the circumference and spray thin coats square from above. Take the mask off once the paint has flashed off, and assemble the running gear only from finished parts.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of tracked equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who paint wheels and tracks separately and assemble only finished parts
  • Those who do not want the running gear to merge into a single dark mass
  • Builders painting with an airbrush

This is a masking accessory, not a kit. Paints, thinner and the target kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. Paint and unmask the wheels on their own, finish the tracks on their own as well, and assemble the running gear only from finished parts. That avoids the track shade drifting onto the tire bands.

It is not advisable. The running gear then merges into a single dark mass and the sharp border the mask created is lost. Pitch the tire bands a shade differently.

That is not guaranteed. The masks are cut for the wheels from the kit named, and another mold may have a different diameter. Check it by holding them against the parts dry.
