Pmask 1:35 Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär, road wheel masks

A set of precisely die-cut self-adhesive masks from the Polish maker Pmask for painting the wheels of a Sturmpanzer IV model in 1:35 scale. The templates define the boundary between the metal hub of the wheel and the rubber tire, so the tire can be oversprayed with an airbrush instead of being painstakingly outlined with a brush. The film has a gentle adhesive, it holds its shape and it does not pull the dried finish off when removed. The dimensions come from one particular kit of this vehicle, so the rings match the real diameter of the hubs.

The real subject

The Sturmpanzer IV, nicknamed Brummbär, was a heavily armored support vehicle on the Panzer IV chassis, armed with a short 150 mm howitzer intended against fortified targets. The road wheels of the running gear had rubber tires, which are set off in color from the rest of the vehicle on a model.

Use and tips

• Spray the wheels with the base color of the vehicle and let them cure completely.
• Stick the ring onto the hub, press the edges down and overspray the tire.
• Instead of pure black, choose a very dark gray with a hint of brown, which looks more natural in scale.
• Take the mask off while the paint is only tacky, and the edge will stay sharp.
