1:35 masking set for the road wheels of the SU-85 and SU-122 — templates that separate the color of the rubber tire band from the color of the rim. The set is cut for the MiniArt kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit or a conversion part. It is a masking aid for one single operation: separating the shade of the rubber tire band cleanly from the shade of the road wheel rim. The set is cut for the MiniArt kits, because wheel dimensions differ between moldings and a mask from another kit will not fit.
Both self-propelled guns stand on the T-34 chassis, that is, on Christie suspension with five large road wheels on each side and no return rollers — the upper run of the track bears directly on the wheels. Everything essential follows from that: the wheel is large in diameter, the tire band is wide and unbroken all the way around, so every tremor of the hand is visible on a finished model at first glance. The wheel spacing is not even; the gap between the first and the second wheel is noticeably larger, which during assembly tempts you into masking the wheels once they are already glued on — the better routine is the reverse, painting and unmasking the wheels loose on a skewer and only then seating them. The chassis of this family was also built with several types of wheel, from pressed solid ones through lightened ones to all-steel ones with no rubber. On an all-steel wheel a mask has nothing to do, as there is no rubber there, so first check which wheel you actually used from the sprue.
Ten large wheels on one model plus the drive sprocket and the idler wheel is an evening's work if you guide the tire bands with a brush, and it usually means two or three repairs of dried paint over the edge. With a template it is one spraying and a moment to unmask. It pays off the more cleanly you want to hand the model over — on a competition piece or on a display model without heavy weathering, the rubber border is one of the first details the eye finds. Conversely, when you already know that the running gear will disappear under a thick layer of mud and pigment, or when you are building a quick model for a collection where nobody will stoop to the wheels, an honestly painted tire band is work nobody will see.
This is an accessory for modelers, not a model. Paints, the kit and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
