About product

U.S. M2 Cal.50 Ammo Box 1:35 - a photo-etched set from Tetra Model Works

A detail set from the Japanese maker Tetra Model Works in 1:35 scale intended for building American ammunition boxes for the heavy machine gun of 12.7 mm caliber. This is not a kit of a vehicle or a weapon: you get sheets of photo-etched parts from which you fold the boxes and add them to an already built model, to a machine gun mount, or distribute them around a diorama. The advantage of photo-etch lies in the thickness of the material - the walls, the lid and the handle come out as thin to scale as neither injection-molded plastic nor a casting can manage.

The real subject

The M2 ammunition box is a steel container with a hinged lid and a folding handle, in which the ammunition belt was supplied to the Browning heavy machine gun of 12.7 mm caliber. The boxes were carried in holders by the mount, in racks on the fenders and loose in the load area as well, so they belong to the equipment of practically every American vehicle with this machine gun. It is precisely stacked, battered and slightly dented boxes that are the detail after which a vehicle model stops looking like an empty shell.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers - photo-etch is easily deformed at the tab. Make the bends in a bender or between two steel jaws, so that the edge is sharp and straight along its whole length. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); more experienced modelers prefer to solder the joints. Degreased brass needs a metal primer, otherwise the paint flakes off the edges. Once the base color has been sprayed, a dark oil wash into the pressings helps, as do fine wear marks on the edges with graphite or a dark steel color and a light dust pigment on the bottom of the boxes.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American vehicles and mounts in 1:35 scale who are bothered by the coarse plastic boxes from the box
  • Diorama builders who need small props for the load area or for figures
  • Modelers with experience of photo-etch, a bender and cyanoacrylate glue
  • Those interested in the fine accessories of Japanese production

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the basic kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an accessory. The set contains photo-etched parts of ammunition boxes which you add to a finished vehicle model, to a machine gun mount or to a diorama. There is no model of a vehicle or a weapon in the package.

The surest is cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) applied with the tip of a toothpick. Experienced modelers solder the joints; the joint is then stronger and it can be sanded. Classic glue for plastic does not hold on brass.

Yes. First degrease the parts and spray a primer intended for metal. Without it the paint flakes off the edges and the bends already during handling.

The boxes are standalone props in 1:35 scale, so you will use them with any suitable model of American equipment. They are not cut for a single specific kit.
