About product

M42A1 photo-etched set, late version, 1:35 (E.T. Model)

A set of photo-etched parts made of thin sheet metal, intended for refining the detail of a plastic model of the American M42A1 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun in 1:35 scale. It is neither a model nor a kit of the vehicle, but an accessory set whose parts replace plastic items wherever injection-molded plastic is too coarse for its thickness. These are typically the grilles, the covers, the loops, the clamps, the tool brackets and other thin-walled items on the hull and the superstructure. The exact scope of the set follows the manufacturer's instructions enclosed in the package.

The real subject

The M42 was an American self-propelled anti-aircraft gun built on the chassis of the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank. In an open rotating turret it carried a pair of 40 mm automatic cannons. The M42A1 version differed from the original one in its reworked powertrain. In service the vehicle was in the end used mainly against ground targets, where the high rate of fire of the rapid-firing cannons did good work in covering convoys and bases. The late version corresponds to the state of the vehicle after the equipment changes had been introduced.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Never break the parts out; cut them out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface. A photo-etch bender is the right tool for folding, and at a pinch two straight blades and a rule will do. Always fold along the marked score line, and rather bend the part a second time than break the metal. They are glued with thin cyanoacrylate, which wicks into the joint by capillary action; on large parts a slow-setting epoxy proves useful, because it gives time to position them. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. Spray fine grilles with thinned paint in thin coats, so that the openings do not clog.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to push the detail of a model of postwar American vehicles beyond the box
  • Builders of dioramas where the vehicle is in the foreground and the detail is seen close up
  • More experienced modelers with basic experience of working with metal
  • A contest build, where the fineness of thin-walled items is judged

This is an accessory photo-etched set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a set of photo-etched metal parts that serves to refine the detail of a plastic model. The base model is obtained separately.

Most often thin cyanoacrylate glue. On larger parts, where you need time to position them, a two-part epoxy proves useful.

We recommend it. On smooth degreased metal the paint holds badly without an undercoat and rubs off during handling.

It calls for patience and precision. If you have not built with photo-etched parts yet, start with the larger parts and simple folds and follow the instructions.
