US Paratroops is a set of two figures in 1:35 scale from the Czech brand CMK. According to the name, these are American paratroopers of the Second World War period. It is neither a vehicle model nor a kit - the figures serve as an accessory to a built model, to a vignette or to a diorama. The castings are supplied unpainted.
Paratroopers have a markedly different silhouette from ordinary infantry, and that is the main reason they are bought separately for a diorama. What marks them out is the jump helmet with its four-point chin strap, the jacket with large patch pockets on the chest and the thighs, high laced boots and strikingly bulky bags and packs slung all around the body. The figure therefore looks heavier and carries more small shapes that come out under paint. Two figures are enough for a small scene where the point is the relationship between the figures rather than filling the space - a pair by a vehicle, over a map or on the move.
Wash the resin castings in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, otherwise mold release agent is left on them and the paint will flake. Cut the casting blocks away with a saw or a sharp scalpel, sand down the mold seams and protect your breathing while sanding. The parts are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; liquid plastic cement does not hold on resin. Spray a thin primer and paint from the large areas to the detail. On a paratrooper's jacket it pays to play the uniform shade a little: a base tone, a slightly lighter cast on the raised areas and a dark wash into the folds. Pick out the webbing, the buckles and the bags last - they are exactly the small things that set the figure apart from ordinary infantry. A matte clear coat at the end brings the sheen into line.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and groundwork materials are not included in the package.
