Large cable drums in 1:35 scale. The set joins laser cut wood with paper and resin parts and forms a mass of its own in a scene.

A large drum is not a small thing, but a full-fledged object comparable to a vehicle of smaller size. If you lay it in the middle of the base it takes the scene over and everything else becomes its accompaniment. A stronger composition comes out when you push it aside or let it partly run out of frame, because the viewer then senses its whole volume without seeing it. A free area has to be left around a piece like this, otherwise the scene thickens and stops being readable.
The decision about the position changes the whole scene. A drum set on end forms a vertical element that divides the picture in two and suits the edge or a spot behind a vehicle. Laid flat it creates a low circle instead, over which you can see further and around which figures arrange themselves well. A pair of drums in slightly different positions works better than two standing the same way, because they stop looking like a production batch. A piece of wooden chocking or a wedge at the foot then explains why they are not rolling.
The package joins laser cut wooden parts with paper and resin sections. The basis is the flat side discs, which have to sit concentrically, otherwise the finished piece leans visibly. Glue the assembly on a flat support therefore and keep checking whether both discs stand parallel. Winding the wire on is done only once the structure has dried and starts at the inner barrel, so that the turns come out evenly.
