A set of weapons of British and Commonwealth units 1:35, set B

An add-on set from the Riich Models brand in 1:35 scale focused on the small arms and equipment of British and Commonwealth units of the Second World War period. It is not a model of a vehicle or a set of figures: it is a set of tiny parts with which already built kits, vehicle interiors and dioramas are completed. There is a sister set A in the range, so the two sets can be combined.

What the set is good for

The weapons that are part of figure kits tend to be simplified and are often molded directly onto a hand or a base. A separate set offers individually injection-molded parts with sharper shapes, so they can be swapped in, laid in the bed of a vehicle, propped against a wall in a diorama or stowed in a crate of equipment. They will serve equally well as a stock for the spares box that is drawn on for further builds.

Building and painting tips

The parts are tiny and thin, so cut them off with a new sharp blade on a mat, and rather over a tray than over a carpet. Sand the sprue nubs off with a fine-grained file, as sandpaper would easily round the thin shapes. The painting is rewarding: spray a dark base, tone the wooden parts with brown and suggest worn spots with a light dry brush, unify the metal parts with a dark shade and liven up the edges with graphite or a metallic pigment. A dilute wash into the recesses will add the relief that paint on its own would not create. Straps made of thin paper or tin foil give the weapons scale.
