This item is an aftermarket set of photo-etched metal from Voyager Model, not a kit of the vehicle. It is cut for the Trumpeter 09535 plastic model and replaces or supplements its thin sheet-metal features, covers and small external equipment. Photo-etched parts are used for this purpose because metal holds a crisp edge and a scale thickness even where a plastic part would have to be markedly heavier for the sake of the mold and of strength.
The Bär was a German design proposal from the later part of the Second World War for a heavy 305 mm self-propelled mortar meant to destroy fortifications and built-up areas. The weapon was to be mounted in a fixed superstructure on a chassis derived from a heavy tank. The project stayed at the proposal stage and never reached broader production, so it is a subject of the so-called paper kind. For the modeler that means a subject with pronounced surfaces and a simple but massive silhouette.
The combination of metal and plastic makes demands on preparing the substrate. Always try a metal part dry and sand the surface under it flat, because cyanoacrylate tolerates no gap: a joint holds only where the materials genuinely touch. Apply the glue with the tip of a toothpick or a drawn-out wire needle, never straight from the bottle. Degreasing is a condition with photo-etched parts, because on greasy metal paint will chip off in time even with a primer. Spray the paint thinly and unify the difference between the plastic and the metal surface with a flat clear coat at the end.
The set holds photo-etched metal parts only. It does not hold the plastic kit, the glue or the paints.
