About product

Side armor screens Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär, early version, 1:35 (Voyager Model)

This is a photo-etched add-on set from Voyager Model, not a kit of the vehicle. It replaces the plastic side screens with thin brass sheet, so the model gets a thickness injection-molded plastic cannot offer. For the build you need your own model of the early version of the Sturmpanzer IV in 1:35 scale.

The real subject

The Sturmpanzer IV, nicknamed the Brummbär, was a German tracked assault vehicle of the Second World War built on the chassis of the Panzer IV tank. In a closed armored superstructure it carried a short 15 cm howitzer meant for destroying fortifications and built-up areas. The early batch of 1943 differed from the later configurations in the shape of the superstructure and in the placement of the external equipment, which is why add-on sets are always tied to one particular development stage. The side screens were thin steel plates hung on brackets above the running gear; they were to catch or deflect a hit before it reached the hull armor itself.

Building and painting tips

The main reason to reach for photo-etched parts on the screens is precisely the scale thickness: plastic parts tend to be several times thicker than the subject calls for, and on a finished model it is visible at a glance. Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers, which would ripple them. Level the remains of the tabs with a fine file, working from the edge inwards. Before gluing, degrease the brass with alcohol, because paint holds poorly on smooth metal, and lay on a thin base coat. They are glued with cyanoacrylate in a minimal dose; excess runs into the engraved detail and dulls it. Metal will also take a slight dent or bend, so suggested combat damage to the screens looks more convincing than on plastic.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building German subjects of the Second World War in 1:35 scale.
  • Anyone interested in a scale-correct thickness for the side screens.
  • Builders with basic experience of photo-etched parts and cyanoacrylate.
  • Those who want to suggest wear and damage to the screens on a model.

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit of the vehicle, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched add-on set for a model you already have. The vehicle itself is not in the package.

The real screens were of thin sheet. Injection-molded plastic is inevitably thicker in 1:35 scale, whereas brass photo-etched parts come close to the subject in thickness.

A model of the early version of the Sturmpanzer IV in 1:35 scale, cyanoacrylate, a scalpel or photo-etch scissors and a base coat for metal.

The screens are among the easier photo-etched parts, because they are large and the bends are straight. It does take patience, a sharp tool and careful dispensing of glue, though.
