About product

What the set contains

Photo-etched metal railings for models of German warships of the Second World War in 1:350 scale. Railings edge the decks, the walkways and the platforms, and on a finished model they are among the elements the eye notices first. In plastic, meanwhile, they cannot be made finely enough: the stanchions and the wires would have to be so thin that an injection mold would not fill them. Thin metal sheet solves that problem and holds the scale even along a long stretch of deck. The exact extent of the fret and the lengths of the individual strips are stated in the manufacturer's instructions.

How to fit the railings

Separate the strips with a sharp blade on a hard surface and sand the remains of the tabs. First mark out on the deck where the railing will run and cut the strip to size; make the bends at the corners beforehand, not on the model. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in short stretches, always only as much as you can hold with tweezers. Apply the glue with the tip of a needle to the feet of the stanchions, so that it does not reach the wires and flood them.

Building and painting tips

Degrease the railings and coat them with a thin layer of base color for metal, otherwise the finish will peel off during handling. Choose the shade according to the superstructure the railing belongs to. Fit the set only at the close of the build, after the deck has been sprayed and the equipment glued on, because a bent stanchion is hard to straighten. Better to cover the finished model with a display case; railings are the most vulnerable part of a ship model.

Only at the close of the build, after the deck and the superstructure have been painted. A bent stanchion is then hard to straighten.

With cyanoacrylate glue applied with the tip of a needle to the feet of the stanchions, so that the wires are not flooded.

The railings are cut to size, so they can be adapted. The recommended use and the lengths of the strips are stated in the manufacturer's instructions, though, so go through those beforehand.
