Eduard Big Ed — HMS York (1:350)

This is a combined set of photo-etched parts from the Big Ed line, not a kit of the ship. Big Ed brings several separately sold photo-etched sets (and usually masks as well) together in a single box. The set is shaped for the plastic kit of the heavy cruiser HMS York in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter and serves to refine the detail of the model considerably. It typically contains railings, ship's ladders, platforms, radar and crane items, parts of the armament and other fine details that injection-molded plastic cannot render at a realistic thickness.

The real subject and the base kit

HMS York was a British heavy cruiser of the class of the same name from the 1930s, used in the Mediterranean in the Second World War. The base Trumpeter model builds the ship in 1:350 scale; this photo-etched set takes it to a collector's level. Photo-etched parts do not replace a whole kit, they only supplement it.

Fitting tips

• Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp knife on a hard surface, never break them out.
• Make the bends over a photo-etch bending tool or a metal ruler for clean edges.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate glue or with a special glue for photo-etched parts; cement for plastic does not hold on metal.
• Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint holds badly.
• Use the masks enclosed for sharp edges of the paintwork and the glazing.
