A ship detail set gathers everything one named kit needs for a full upgrade into a single box: photo-etched parts, usually a wooden deck, masks, anchor chains, sometimes turned brass barrels and a nameplate. Instead of assembling the upgrade piece by piece you buy one package drawn around an exact catalogue number, whether the hull on your bench is a German battleship, a British battlecruiser or a Japanese giant.
Because everything in the box was developed against the same sprues, the parts fit without measuring or guesswork. What the sets contain, how far the detailing goes and why the catalogue number matters so much are all covered below.
The core of every box is photo-etched brass: railings, ladders, radar arrays, cranes, catapults and funnel grilles. Richer editions add a self-adhesive wooden deck, masks for the deck lines, anchor chain, mooring eyes and occasionally metal barrels or an etched nameplate. Each sheet is drawn for one kit alone, which is what removes the fitting problems that dog generic railing. Measured against the same items bought separately, a combined box usually also spares you several part orders.
A set is tied to a specific release of the kit, and we quote that release in the item title. The same ship from a different tooling, or even a newer tooling from the same source, divides its parts differently and the etch will not line up. Compare the number on your box before ordering, not after.
The widest choice of combined boxes sits in 1:350 ship detail sets and 1:700 ship detail sets. Large flagship kits are served by 1:200 ship detail sets, collectors' hulls by 1:144 ship detail sets, and surface craft by 1:72 ship detail sets.
Basic boxes deal with railings and the most visible assemblies; superdetail editions run to several hundred parts including replacement armament. For a first etched ship, choose the smaller scope. A finished basic upgrade beats an abandoned superdetail every time.
A combined box remains the fastest route from a boxed kit to a competition hull. If you would rather compare the individual kinds of upgrade, start from ship model accessories, and pick the hull itself among the plastic ship model kits.
