About product

1:350 TBD-1 Devastator in the Pre-painted form from Trumpeter

This accessory plastic set of TBD-1 Devastator carrier aircraft in 1:350 scale is intended to populate the deck of an aircraft carrier model. According to the Pre-painted designation the parts have a colored surface from the factory, so the modeler mainly deals with cleaning up and seating them. It is not a model of an aircraft in its own right; at this scale the aircraft has a span of a few centimeters.

The real subject

The TBD Devastator was an American carrier torpedo bomber, one of the first all-metal monoplanes of its kind in naval service. It had a wide glazed canopy for a crew of several, folding wings and, compared with later types, a low speed. By the early 1940s it was already at the limit of its useful life and more modern machines soon replaced it in service, which makes it a type that only makes sense on a deck within a narrow window of time.

Building and usage tips

Precisely because this is a type from a short period, it pays to think through in advance what period the diorama is to show and to choose the mix of aircraft on the deck accordingly. Separate the parts from the sprue with support from a surface, so that the pressure of the knife is not transferred into thin areas. Sprue nubs are best sanded with a piece of abrasive paper slipped onto a wooden stick, as the control over removal is greater than with a file. Do the touching in with a dry brush and a minimum of paint, as on an area a few millimeters across a layer of paint shows up as a lump at once. For standing them on the deck, a drop of glue applied with a toothpick directly onto the contact faces of the landing gear helps.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of aircraft carrier models and dioramas in 1:350 scale
  • Modelers who want a historically correct mix of aircraft on the deck
  • Anyone interested in American carrier aviation of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s
  • Those who will appreciate aircraft with a factory finish and a quick way to populate a deck

This is an accessory set for ship and diorama models, not a large model of an aircraft in its own right. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The exact number is given in the manufacturer's description on the box. Sets in 1:350 scale usually hold several pieces.

Models of aircraft carriers in 1:350 scale. The particular ship does not follow from the name, and it is best to let the choice be guided by the period in which the type was in service.

For the joints between parts, yes. For attaching a finished aircraft to the deck a drop of cyanoacrylate is more practical, as it holds even on a painted surface.

With a dry brush and a minimum of paint mixed to match the surrounding shade. A fine matte varnish at the end then brings the touched-in area and the factory finish together.
