This is a complete ship kit meant to be assembled and painted, not an accessory and not a finished model. A cruiser with a long hull and broken-up superstructures is a rewarding but time-consuming project at this scale.
The USS Des Moines was the lead ship of the class of heavy cruisers of the same name, completed shortly after the Second World War. Ships of this class were the largest gun heavy cruisers ever to enter service, and their main weapon was 203 mm guns with automatic loading. Those gave them a rate of fire incomparable with older cruisers, whose turrets were loaded by hand. The armament was supplemented by dual-purpose 127 mm guns and anti-aircraft weapons. The Des Moines also served as a flagship and was withdrawn from service at the beginning of the 1960s.
Decide in advance whether you will build the model full-hull on a stand or as a waterline version. Fill and sand the joint of the hull halves carefully; on a large model every unevenness shows. Paint the deck and the sides before you fit the small superstructures, the gun turrets and the boats. Fine railings, ladders and radar antennas can be replaced with photo-etched parts and the barrels with turned metal ones; both are sold separately. A uniform gray finish is typical of postwar ships, so clean work with the shades and fine emphasis of the edges matter; exaggerated weathering looks unconvincing on these vessels.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
