Responsibility details are not available.
A combined set from the maker Artwox Model for the plastic kit of the American large cruiser USS Hawaii (CB-3) in 1:350 scale. According to the name it holds a veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and a self-adhesive backing, and masks for painting. The model, glue and shades are not part of the package. The set is cut for the Hobby Boss 86515 kit.
Engraved planks on plastic largely disappear once paint is sprayed on, and the deck comes across as one flat area. Veneer, by contrast, has a grain of its own and fine differences in height, so it works in the light and the deck reads differently from different angles. That is exactly why veneer decks have spread among larger ship models.
The veneer comes in one base shade and looks even without any treatment. Anyone after a truer result tones it with a thin stain or a heavily thinned oil paint applied to a few randomly chosen planks and left to dry; a slight difference of shade between planks is more convincing than perfect uniformity. A very thin dark wash can then be led into the seams; it is applied with a brush at the edge of a seam and left to wick. Always test on an offcut first, because wood soaks up quickly and an over-toned area cannot be lightened again. Finally seal the deck with matte varnish in a thin coat, so that it does not flood the pattern of the seams.
An accessory for a kit, not a ship model. The kit, paints, stain and varnish are not included in the package.
