The second part of the photo-etched series Eduard released for a model of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid CV-11 in 1:350 scale. Detailing a ship of this size is divided into several separately sold sheets precisely because one set could not take in all the features a large aircraft carrier offers. Further parts of the same series exist besides this one, so you choose the order and the extent of your purchase according to how far you want to take the build. The material is thin photo-etched metal sheet, which on fine features reads more naturally than injection-molded plastic.
The Intrepid belonged to the Essex class, the backbone of the American carrier force in the Pacific at the close of the Second World War. The design drew on prewar experience and offered a large hangar, a long flight deck and a side island with command stations. After the war the ship went through rebuilds that brought an angled deck and altered superstructure, and she passed gradually into the anti-submarine role. A modeler should be clear before building about which period he is building: between the wartime and the later appearance of the ship there is a difference in the arrangement of the deck, in the armament and in the equipment of the superstructure.
Leave the parts on the fret as long as possible and cut them off only at the moment you really glue them. Small parts like to jump away, so work over a light surface with no open drains. Make the bends exactly along the marked score line, never by guesswork. For gluing, super glue in gel form has proved itself, as it does not run into the surroundings. We recommend spraying metal parts mounted on a model with a primer for metal before the final shade comes along. Only at the very end comes the bringing out of shadows and the fine soiling that visually joins the photo-etched features to the rest of the model.
It is not a kit of the ship. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
