An unassembled plastic kit of the American aircraft carrier USS Ranger CV-4 in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. The manufacturer states more than 950 parts on twenty-six sprues (plus the hull and the decks), a one-piece hull, a finely worked flight deck and hangar deck, photo-etched parts, a metal anchor chain and decals for the ship and the aircraft. Crucial for making up your mind: the aircraft are part of the package - according to the manufacturer fighter, dive bomber and torpedo types (F6F, TBF and SBD). The finished model is about 67 cm long and over 9 cm wide, which makes it one of the largest pieces that can be built in 1:350. The hull is designed as a full hull; the manufacturer does not declare a waterline option cut down to the water line.
Ranger was the first ship of the US Navy built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier - the earlier American carriers came about by converting other vessels (a collier and incomplete battlecruisers respectively). Ranger was markedly smaller and slower than they were, her island superstructure was added only later, and for that very reason she was not considered suitable for the great battles in the Pacific. She served out the war in the Atlantic: her aircraft supported the landings in North Africa and in 1943 she took part in a strike against German shipping off the Norwegian coast - a rare case of an American aircraft carrier being deployed in European waters. Ranger thus represents an important intermediate step between the first experiments and the large carriers that came after her.
An aircraft carrier is distinctive in that the flight deck is what is seen first - give it all the care you can. Render the wooden deck with shades of the individual planks and handle the deck markings with decals or masks, not with a brush. Paint the hangar and its fittings before you close the deck up - after that you will not get inside. The rest is classic ship discipline: the superstructure, the armament, the boats, the railings and the rigging, that is, a large quantity of small parts. Glue the plastic with extra-thin liquid cement and the photo-etched parts and the anchor chain with super glue. The aircraft are tiny in this scale: paint them on the sprue and concentrate on clean transitions between colors. Spray the blue-gray camouflage with an airbrush in thin coats and keep the weathering in check. Railings and ladders are commonly added with photo-etched parts; a basic photo-etched fret is in the box, while complete railings are obtained separately.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
