About product

The 500 kg m/56 Lyra bomb and the 1000 lb bomb in 1:48 - three pieces from Maestro Models

The set contains three resin castings of a large aircraft bomb in 1:48 scale. According to the name it matches the Swedish 500 kg mine bomb designated m/56 and named Lyra as well as the British 1000 lb bomb - in shape these are closely related munitions, so one package covers two different modeling subjects. It is not an aircraft kit, but an armament accessory for the stores or the bomb bay of a finished model.

The real subject

The Swedish designation m/56 gives the year of entry into service, that is, the 1956 type; the name Lyra belongs to a range in which Swedish bombs were given names of their own. A mine bomb of this category has a relatively thin casing wall and a large proportion of explosive, so its main effect is blast. The British 1000 lb bomb, that is, roughly 454 kg, was among the basic armament of Western bomber and attack aircraft after the Second World War and in various forms it lasted a long time. That is exactly why the same casting can be used for models of both traditions; the differences tend to lie mainly in the fins and the suspension.

Building and painting tips

With large bombs the most important thing is a flat mating surface. Cut the casting block off with a saw, level the surface on sandpaper laid on glass and only then try the bomb on the pylon. Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap before painting. Attach them with cyanoacrylate glue; with a heavier part, pre-drill the joint and reinforce it with a piece of wire - a glued seating alone comes loose easily when the model is handled. Swedish and British munitions differ in color, so choose the scheme according to the machine you are building and spray the identification bands through a mask. Picking the seams out with a thin wash is enough; a large bomb does not need pronounced weathering.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Swedish as well as British aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want realistic heavy stores instead of plastic substitutes
  • Builders of dioramas with munitions and handling equipment
  • Modelers used to working with resin and cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name gives both designations for the same product, because in shape these are closely related munitions. The package contains three pieces; deal with the differences between Swedish and British use mainly through the color scheme.

The designation m/56 is the Swedish way of writing the year of entry into service, that is, the 1956 type. Lyra is a name of its own within the Swedish range of bombs.

With a large bomb a glued joint alone tends to be weak. We recommend pre-drilling the joint and reinforcing it with a piece of wire; it is attached with cyanoacrylate glue.

Yes, in lukewarm water with dish soap. That removes the mold release agent; without it neither primer nor paint holds properly on resin.
