About product

Airspeed Oxford Mk.I/II Commonwealth Service 1:48 (Special Hobby)

This kit in 1:48 scale captures the British twin-engine Airspeed Oxford trainer in the Mk.I and Mk.II versions. It is a short-run injection-molded model from the Czech maker Special Hobby, supplied unassembled and unpainted. The Commonwealth Service boxing focuses on aircraft operated by the air forces of the Commonwealth countries, where the Oxford formed the backbone of the training system.

The real subject

The Airspeed Oxford was a twin-engine all-wood aircraft with mixed covering, powered by Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah radial engines. It came about in the second half of the 1930s as a general-purpose trainer and became one of the most widespread training types of the Second World War. The Mk.I version carried a dorsal gun turret and served to train gunners and bomb aimers, while the Mk.II lacked the turret and was intended mainly for training pilots, navigators and radio operators. The aircraft flew within a wide training program outside Britain as well, among other places in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. After the war the Oxfords continued in service as liaison and transport aircraft and some went on to civil use.

Building and painting tips

Short-run molds call for more work than a mainstream kit: count on cleaning the parts up, dry fitting them and refining the mating surfaces with abrasive paper. Glue with thin cement for plastic applied by capillary action, and use cyanoacrylate glue on any resin or photo-etched parts. The glazing of the pilot's cockpit is a prominent feature on the Oxford, so masking templates or carefully cut strips of masking tape pay off. Apply a primer before painting, so that the surface evens out after filling, and spray with an airbrush in thin coats. Use a gloss varnish under the decals and knock the surface back with a matte coat once dry.

Who the model is for

  • modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • collectors of British training aircraft of the Second World War
  • anyone interested in the air forces of the Commonwealth countries
  • builders who want an unusual twin-engine type in 1:48 in their collection

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a classic plastic kit. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and the glue and the paints are not included in the package.

The Mk.I carried a dorsal gun turret and was used to train gunners and bomb aimers, while the Mk.II had no turret and served mainly to train pilots, navigators and radio operators.

Rather not. Short-run molds call for dry fitting, filling and sanding, so it suits a modeler with several built models behind them.
