A 1:48 decal sheet for the Avro Lancaster B.I and B.III. It carries the markings of the machine RF128 of the Canadian No. 424 Squadron and of the aircraft LL785 with the code WS-F of No. 9 Squadron.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Canadian No. 424 Squadron was given the nickname Tiger and from the spring of 1944 flew Lancasters within No. 6 Group, which in Bomber Command brought Canadian crews together. Its machines carried the code pair QB and operated from the airfield of Skipton-on-Swale in northern Yorkshire. The aircraft RF128 with the individual letter V had a motif painted on the nose with the name Victorious Virgin, of the kind crews painted after a given number of operations flown.
Alongside the Canadian aircraft the sheet carries the markings of the Lancaster LL785, which served with No. 9 Squadron with the code WS and the letter F. It bore the name Fanlight Fanny. The two aircraft therefore represent two different wings of the night bomber effort: one Canadian, the other British, but both with an absolutely identical airframe silhouette.
The Lancaster was built in series of thousands and only three places set individual examples apart: the squadron code, the individual letter and the serial number on the rear fuselage. Without them a model stays only a type. With them it becomes a particular aircraft with a story of its own, and that is exactly what makes building from documentation interesting.
The large letters on the sides of the fuselage are better transferred one at a time and left to settle on a damp glossy area. An air bubble gets under a long piece easily and once dry you will no longer force it out. Prick it with the tip of a knife and go over it with a drop of decal softener, then leave the decal undisturbed for at least forty-five minutes.
