About product

Type b (FS) wheels for the early B-17 in 1:48 scale (Armory)

This set holds resin main landing gear wheels with weighted tires in the type b (FS) execution and photo-etched hub covers. It is intended for the early versions of the Flying Fortress, that is the B-17B, C, D, E and F. The type designation sets the tread apart from the sister set of type a; both apply to the same versions of the aircraft and differ only in the pattern of the tread and the sidewall of the tire.

Resin and photo-etched parts alongside plastic

A wheel is one of the few parts where the parting line of the mold runs straight across the area that is best seen on a finished model. A cast resin piece removes that problem and holds finer engraving as well. A photo-etched hub cover then replaces a thick plastic rim with material of a thickness that cannot be produced in an injection mold. The result is a wheel that holds up in 1:48 scale even in a close photograph, together with a realistic stance for the model thanks to the flattened contact patch.

Fitting and painting tips

Wash the castings in warm soapy water. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the remainder wet on abrasive paper, so that the flattening stays straight; do not breathe resin dust in. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, as cement for plastic does not work here. Cut the photo-etched part off with a scalpel on a hard surface, not by twisting it, so that it does not bend. Before fitting it, dome it slightly so that it seats on the hub. We recommend mixing the tire to a very dark gray rather than black, and flattening it. The hub is painted according to the particular machine; you separate it with a ring of masking tape, which you cut with a circle cutter.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the early B-17 versions in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want a wheel with no seam and a crisp tread
  • anyone interested in fine photo-etched detail on the hub
  • more experienced modelers working with resin and photo-etched parts

This is an accessory set, not a model of the aircraft. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check the match with the landing gear of your own model beforehand.

FAQ

In the type of tire, that is the pattern of the tread and the shape of the sidewall. The application to the early B-17 versions and the 1:48 scale stay the same.

Lay the fret on a hard, smooth surface and cut the tab through vertically with a scalpel. Twisting or tearing always deforms a thin photo-etched part.

Only where the casting block was. Sand wet and on flat paper, so that the flattened contact patch stays straight and the model does not stand crooked once fitted.
