Four designs from the noses of B-17G bombers whose names come from period hits and wordplay. 1:48 scale.

Anyone who wants to understand why American bombers were named the way they were should listen to the radio of 1943. The nickname Sleepy Time Gal comes from a hit that everyone knew, and Madame Shoo Shoo plays with a phrase the soldiers used to hear in France. Heaven Sent aims at the hope that the machine would come back, and Miss Conduct is a pun joining a female epithet with the word for a misdeed. Four names, four moods of one generation.
All four aircraft are of version B-17G, that is, the later guise of the Flying Fortress with a chin turret. They served with the Eighth Air Force, which from England carried out daylight raids deep over the continent. Besides the drawings themselves, the printing contains small symbols recording combat activity, which were set out beside the nose in horizontal strings. Their number was a matter of pride for the crew, and when a man moved to another unit they were sometimes repainted on the new machine.
The ideal surface is a smooth gloss finish free of dust. Cut the drawing out with a minimal margin, soak it and wait until it starts to move on the paper by itself. Move it across whole, line it up along the rows of rivets and blot off the excess water with the edge of a paper towel. Only then reach for a solution that softens the carrier layer; it is applied from above with a brush, and once the drawing is in place it is not moved again until it has dried. A final layer of clear coat evens out the sheen and the design connects with the surrounding finish.
