A photo-etched set for the Soviet BA-64 light armored car in 1:48 scale is an accessory for a plastic kit you have already bought, not a model in its own right. It supplies the small sheet-metal elements that decide the credibility of a small model.

The smaller the vehicle, the more the thickness of plastic jars on a model. With the BA-64 that goes double - it is a tiny car, where every millimeter of excess thickness strikes the eye. The photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler offers a replacement for precisely those parts that ought to be as thin as paper in the scale. The set is an accessory for the Tamiya plastic kit; you cannot build a model from it on its own.
The BA-64 was a Soviet light armored car introduced during 1942 on the chassis of a GAZ off-road car. It had a crew of two, an armored hull with markedly sloped walls and an open turret with a 7.62 mm machine gun. It arose as a quick, cheap and easily produced replacement for the older heavy armored cars and was used mainly for reconnaissance, communications, escorting columns and as a command car. Several thousand were built, and they served to the end of the war and beyond it.
Before you start cutting, degrease the whole photo-etched sheet in spirit or in a degreaser - grease from your fingers holds on metal and will later make it impossible for the primer to take. Leave the parts on the sheet as long as you can and cut them off only just before gluing. The sloped armor walls of the BA-64 invite marked shading: a light filter from above and a dark wash into the corners will give the little car depth. The open turret exposes the interior, so paint it before you close it in with the rest of the superstructure.
This is an accessory set for a kit you have already bought. It is supplied unpainted; the base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
