About product

British flimsy cans in 1:48 scale

An accessory for builders of military hardware and dioramas from the Czech maker Hauler. It is not a model nor a kit but a set of fuel containers that the British army used in the first half of the Second World War. A modeler will use them as cargo on a vehicle, as a supply at a field station or as discarded refuse in the terrain.

The real subject

The British fuel can of four imperial gallons, that is roughly eighteen liters, was made of very thin sheet and was counted on as a single-use container. Soldiers nicknamed it the flimsy, that is the feeble one, as it was easily punctured during handling and a considerable part of the contents escaped from it in transport. Because of this British units replaced it with a more durable can derived from the German pattern. It is precisely this unreliability, however, that means the cans lay about everywhere British units moved, which makes them a rewarding accessory for a scene.

Painting tips

Variety does the most work. However many you have, do not paint them all the same: leave some in a factory sheet-metal color, dirty some, and on one or two suggest a spilled layer of fuel running down the side. Spray the base thinly, add a dark wash into the recesses and suggest the edges with a dry brush. A light suggestion of dents and punctures is also suitable, as it is thin sheet that in practice deformed during ordinary handling. Wash and degrease the accessories before gluing; they are glued with cyanoacrylate, and if you are laying them loose in the terrain a drop of PVA glue is enough.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British hardware of the Second World War in 1:48
  • creators of dioramas with a field station or a supply scene
  • modelers who want to furnish a vehicle with credible cargo
  • anyone interested in the period of the fighting in North Africa and the early phases of the war

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the military nickname for the British fuel can of very thin sheet. The word means feeble and refers to how easily the container was punctured.

British and Allied hardware in 1:48 scale and dioramas from the first half of the Second World War. It is not tied to a particular kit.

The modeler can fine-tune the dents himself, as a thin accessory usually allows it.
