About product

CH-46 Sea Knight – seamless air intakes with FOD guards 1:48 (Armycast)

A resin accessory set for a model of the CH-46 Sea Knight transport helicopter in 1:48 scale. It contains the engine air intakes cast in one piece, that is, with no parting seam down the middle, rounded out with guards against foreign objects being drawn in, which in aviation practice are referred to by the abbreviation FOD. The set is intended as a replacement for the plastic parts of the basic kit; it does not contain the helicopter model itself.

What it does on a model

In injection-molded kits the air intakes tend to be split into two halves, and a distinct parting groove appears in the throat that can only be sanded away with great difficulty, because a tool cannot get inside. A resin casting removes that problem, because the throat is smooth straight out of the mold. The guards then cover the intake and replace the indistinct relief on the plastic with a legible structure that shows clearly on a finished model.

Fitting and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release residue comes off; otherwise neither paint nor glue will hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, do not snap them; sand wet and with your airways protected, because resin dust is fine. They are glued only with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy; ordinary cement for plastic will not bond resin. Check the fit dry before gluing and fill any gaps with putty. Paint the inside of the throat before you fit the part to the fuselage; you will have better access to it.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the CH-46 Sea Knight in 1:48 scale
  • builders bothered by the parting groove inside the air intake
  • those who want legible guards on the intakes
  • modelers with experience of working with resin parts

This is an accessory for modelers, not a kit in its own right. The basic model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory set that replaces some of the parts of the basic kit. The helicopter model itself has to be obtained separately.

It denotes damage from a foreign object drawn into an engine. Guards on the air intakes are meant to prevent that and they form a prominent detail on a model.

Cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy. Cement for polystyrene does not soften resin, so no joint is formed.

Yes, wash them in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent comes off. Then lay down a base coat; on smooth resin the paint would otherwise hold poorly.
